Can I Foster If I'm on Benefits?

Can I foster if I am on benefits

This is one of the most common questions we get at Foster with us.
Lots of people worry that being on benefits will stop them from becoming a foster carer. The good news is that, in many cases, it does not.
Many foster carers receive benefits and still provide safe, loving homes for children and young people.
When you enquire about fostering, your local council will look at your whole situation. They want to understand who you are, what your home life is like, and whether you can meet the needs of a child.

What benefits might people receive?

Everyone's situation is different, but some people who enquire about fostering may receive:

  • Universal Credit
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Carer's Allowance
  • Housing Benefit
  • Child Benefit for their own children

Receiving these benefits does not automatically rule you out from fostering.

Does fostering affect benefits?

Sometimes it can, but it depends on the benefits you receive and your personal circumstances.
Fostering allowances are often treated differently from normal earnings, which is why it is important to get the right advice for your situation.
The rules can be different for different people, so it is always worth asking questions.

Where can I find more information?

The Fostering Network has helpful information about fostering, allowances and benefits. It can be a great place to learn more and understand how fostering may affect your finances.
